What You'll Do:

We are seeking a Copywriter for a one-year position to join a diverse team and spearhead content development for our upcoming website redesign as well as other public-facing print and digital content. The Copywriter will report directly to the Editorial Strategy Director.


Candidates must be excellent writers, editors, proofreaders, researchers, and storytellers, steeped in current and historical topics in criminal justice, skilled in project management, experienced in writing for search engine optimization (SEO), adept in racial equity, and with a proven track record of published web and marketing copy.


The Copywriter should be a deadline-driven self-starter with outstanding linguistic and grammar skills. They should be able to quickly learn and be able to communicate Vera’s mission and organizational priorities and issues and adapt to Vera’s unique voice and editorial style.


They will be tasked with creating and editing content that educates, informs, inspires, and persuades website visitors; helps motivate and guide them to learn about Vera’s work; and ultimately moves them to action. Just as importantly, the Copywriter must be competent in SEO and must be able to balance writing simultaneously for search engines and for people.


They will need to understand who Vera’s audience is, how to reach them, and how they can be converted into followers and supporters.

1. Audit

  • Performing an audit of all existing content on Vera’s website, including home page, about us, issue, work, spotlight, and sub-pages.

2. Website Updates

  • Working with Vera’s editorial and digital teams to identify needed website updates and additions.

3. Copywriting

  • Helping to define and develop messaging. 
  • Writing cohesive, organized, and compelling website copy (both updated and new) that inspires people to learn more about Vera’s work and act. as well as other public-facing print and digital content. 
  • Working with Vera’s editorial, digital, and leadership teams through the production process, including revisions and multiple rounds of editing. Candidates should take feedback well and adjust content accordingly.

4. Reporting 

  • Providing regular reports about strategies, goals, processes, and project updates.


What qualifications you will need

Required:

  • At least seven years of experience writing about social justice issues for mission-driven organizations, with a preference for criminal justice experience.
  • A background in digital writing or marketing. Bachelor’s degree preferred in marketing, writing, journalism, or a closely related field, or mastery of equivalent skills and experience such as a track record of completed large-scale web copywriting projects.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to accomplish similar projects. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects of this scope.
  • A portfolio of digital and print copywriting content for mission-driven organizations.
  • Passion. A deep knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to transformation of the criminal legal and immigration systems.
  • A record of published web content. A portfolio of at least three website projects of similar size and scope for mission-driven organizations.
  • Creativity. Ability to write compellingly about Vera’s work in innovative and engaging ways.
  • Expertise. Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills. The ability to write quickly, clearly, persuasively, and accessibly across a variety of issues. Open to and willing to incorporate feedback as part of the product development process.
