About the job

The Prototype team’s responsibilities include creating functional hardware prototypes upon which a software team can rapidly develop the experiences and product features to explore features and experiences early in the product development process while enabling faster and more effective decisions. We work to support early detailed product design questions, display prototype exploration, and sensor development platforms. We create using the appropriate level of fidelity and then iterate quickly.

As a Product Design Engineer, you will focus on early prototypes and work closely with Product Managers, User Experience team members, and Product Design teams in developing cross-functional prototypes for Mixed Reality products. You will work on system key performance indicators (KPIs), layouts, architecture trade-offs, and product feature development. In addition, you'll work on functional near factor devices, display integration/development technologies, sensor integration, KPI impact assessments, and goals.

The Google Augmented Reality team is a diverse group of experts tasked with building the foundations for great immersive computing and building helpful, delightful user experiences. We're focused on making immersive computing accessible to billions of people through mobile devices, and our scope continues to grow and evolve.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conceptualize product components and subsystems for devices and services prototype consumer electronic devices, including optomechanical subsystems such as connectors, switches, camera modules, light sources, projector systems, optoelectronic packages, and ophthalmic devices.
  • Design hardware for fit, comfort, and anthropometry.
  • Develop advanced material and processing techniques for cross-disciplinary, mechanical, optical, and electrical system components.
  • Work with rapid design iterations and conceptual and physical prototyping to drive subsystems specifications and understand the design limitations and trade space parameters for multi-variable problems.
  • Work with leads across disciplines (e.g., Product Design, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Optical, Test, Mechanical, Product, etc.) to identify trade-offs and requirements for system-level component specifications.
