Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.


We are looking for a research intern with expertise in bioinformatics/biomedical informatics, AI/ML UX research & design, and human-computer interaction to help us understand user needs and challenges in healthcare and genomic workflows. We are looking for an intern who likes conducting foundational research and is comfortable with ideation and user-centered design. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical abilities, knowledge of medical/drug discovery end-to-end process related to jobs-to-be-done and AI/MLOps; Experience with user research & design, qualitative/quantitative research, interviewing stakeholders, and ability to create customer journey maps, service blueprints, frameworks, wireframes, and visualizations. 


Note that letters of recommendation are not required for this position.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in biomedical informatics, computational biology or related health behavior and technology centered design program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to conduct independent research.
  • Knowledgeable in user research methodology, qualitative and quantitative.
  • Ability to develop an original user research plan.
  • Excellent communication skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Experience conducting stakeholder interviews in healthcare or public health settings.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to identify stakeholder needs and pain points. 
  • Experience translating user needs and developing empathy for the user thru a deep understanding of user-centered design methods and applications.
  • Ability to create customer journey maps, service blueprints, and apply innovative approaches to communicate user insights to diverse teams. 
  • MBA or related business background in healthcare or medical discovery.
  • Knowledge of medical/drug discovery end-to-end process and genomics workflows.
