Job Details

Quip, a Salesforce company, is on a mission to change the way teams work together. We’re doing this by building a new class of productivity tool that every person at every company enjoys using every single day.

We’re looking for a hard-working, critically-thinking, and self-motivated Product Design Intern to join the small and passionate Quip design team. This designer must excel at visual design work (both working within visual systems and inventing new visual systems), have proven interaction design experience, and possess an aptitude for product-level strategic systems design.

An internship on the Product Design team is a serious, full-time, twelve-week commitment. Over the summer you’ll first design static mockups and interactive prototypes and then work with an engineer to build and ship features in the Quip web application. You’ll be expected to rapidly produce multiple full-fidelity variations and iterations as you work, responding to stakeholder feedback and user research. You’ll receive guidance and mentorship, but will also be expected to operate independently at an entry-level Product Designer skill level.

The ideal candidate already has experience designing beautiful, effective websites or applications, a creative mindset, familiarity with the design process, and pixel-perfect attention to detail. This person must be able to understand the underlying business objectives, rapidly problem solve though mockups, and positively respond to creative feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly create full-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes for a feature in the Quip product
  • Participate in design critiques, presenting your work with variations and rationale, as well as feedback for others’
  • Compellingly communicate your ideas to, and incorporate the ideas of, a wide variety of teammates and stakeholders
  • Adhere to, and extend as necessary, the existing style guide
  • Generate detailed specifications and export engineering-ready assets of final designs
  • Work side-by-side with engineers to ensure your work functions as well in production as it does in your design

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or similar program
  • A portfolio of visual and interactive application design work that includes process work with variations, rationale, prototyped interactive explorations, and lessons learned
  • Knowledge of design fundamentals including layout, color, typography, and tone
  • Humility, a sense of humor, and the ability to give and receive creative feedback

Nice to Have

  • Technical expertise including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Swift, Objective-C, etc. and framework awareness
  • Print design work and a traditional graphic design background
  • Side projects and branding work
