User Experience Researcher Responsibilities

  • Work closely with product teams to identify research questions related to what users do with and expect from the operations, processes or products they use in everyday life.
  • Design and execute studies that address both user behavior and attitudes, using the right methods for the right questions to assess operations, processes, or products.
  • Generate insights that influence how product teams think about medium and long-term product strategy.
  • Directly influence product strategy and design by communicating clearly and in a compelling way.
  • Conduct research using a wide variety of qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, ethnographies, focus groups, and diary studies.
  • Interpret and analyze research results through the lens of UX and social science to create design visions and design products appropriate to user needs, concerns, and abilities.
  • Collaborate closely with qualitative researchers, and understand when to bring in quantitative experts for support.
  • Devise and execute creative methods in getting non-design partners to internalize and act upon research, particularly engineers, analysts, and other technical experts.
  • Create and visualize concepts, and develop and test experiential prototypes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Science, Design for Interactions, or a closely related field and 24 months of work experience in job offered or alternate occupation of Design Researcher (all levels), Human Factors Specialist (all levels), Design Fellow, Design Intern, or closely related occupation. Experience must include 24 months of experience in each of the following:
  • Developing insights, frameworks, personas, journey maps, and principles that inform design decisions
  • Conducting lab-based user experience and usability tests and validation
  • Creating research plans and new research methodologies
  • Contributing to innovation, strategy, and user experience design aspects of projects and business development efforts
  • Facilitating research and participatory design through workshops and focus groups
  • Conducting qualitative field research through one-on-one in-depth interviews
  • Conducting research through user and stakeholder interviews.
