- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Experimental Psychology, Anthropology, Information Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with research design utilizing various methods.
- 8 years of experience in an applied research setting, and/or product research, and development.
- Can effectively prioritize time between multiple projects, and be flexible by adapting to changing schedules and different projects, and can communicate priorities and tradeoffs effectively with stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to drive insights to action in an academic or research environment.
- Quantitative research skills.
- Passion for emerging tech and trends in language understanding and conversational AI.

We are Language UX; a tight-knit team within the Research product area that partners closely with research scientists, engineers, and product managers who develop Google's state-of-the art language and translation technologies. Our mission is twofold; on the one hand, we are the custodians of Googles's helpful translation products and produce work that brings coherence to translation experiences across Google's ecosystem. We also leverage our unique vantage point in the organization to observe emerging science and technology trends to anticipate and execute research that not only supply the field with a human perspective, but also enable new product partnerships across product areas.
In recent years, language and translations have seen transformational advances that have changed how people interact with technology, and in some cases with each other. Advances in natural language understanding have made conversational experiences ubiquitous, while new machine translation techniques have further reduced language barriers. As a UX Research Lead in Google’s Language UX team, you’ll have a front-row seat to cutting-edge scientific research in the language and translation space. You will combine their interest in emerging technologies with their natural curiosity to independently seek out research areas of impact, connect with the stakeholders, anticipate research needs or product opportunities, prioritize efforts of value, and craft and execute on a research agenda that will shape the direction of the research and/or unlock new product partnership opportunities.
- Set research strategy for Natural Language Understanding research groups, partnering closely with Research scientists, Product Management, Engineering and other cross-functional partners.
- Work independently with cross-functional peers to identify, prioritize, and execute research opportunities in an academically oriented research environment.
- Initiate and lead research activities personally.
- Provide strategic and tactical insights, conduct independent research, collect and analyze behavior through a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, understand and incorporate complex technical and business requirements into research.
- Drive change by advocating research findings with actionable insights to diverse audiences through written reports and live presentations.
